Highlights

Papaya's are an awesome addition to edible gardens, food forests, and permaculture gardens because they produce so much food in a short period of time. This Red Lady papaya cultivar has it all! It is a dwarf cultivar perfect for small gardens and containers. These papaya seedlings are started from seed. If grown in ideal conditions, it can start producing in 10 months. Red Lady is a dwarf papaya cultivar, maturing at about 8-10FT.
This is a tropical plant that does not like the cold. Protect smaller/baby plants when temperatures drop below 50F. Once mature and established they can endure a little more cold. If your in zones 9B and up, it should survive the winter. Zones 8 and below will need to bring in doors for the winter.

Papaya seeds typically begin germination within two to six weeks after planting, though this timeline depends on environmental conditions. The most important factor governing the speed and success of this process is consistent heat, as papaya is a tropical plant. The ideal soil temperature must be maintained between 77°F and 95°F, with an optimal range of 85°F to 90°F for the fastest results. Temperatures consistently falling below 70°F will slow the process or cause the seeds to enter dormancy.

A seed-starting mat placed under the planting tray is often necessary to maintain the required warmth, especially when growing indoors or in cooler climates. The seeds should be sown shallowly, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, in a sterile, well-draining seed-starting mix. Planting too deeply can exhaust the seedling’s energy reserves before it breaks the soil surface. The planting medium must be kept consistently moist but never waterlogged, as excessive moisture combined with high heat can lead to seed rot or fungal issues.

Instructions:

Soak the papaya seeds in distilled water at room temperature for 24 hours to increase germination.

Planting:
Choose a container or location: You can start seeds in seed trays or individual pots indoors, or directly in the ground in warm climates.
Use appropriate soil: A well-draining seed-starting mix or amended garden soil is recommended.
Plant the seeds: Sow seeds about ¼ to ½ inch deep.
Maintain warmth and moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist and the temperature warm (ideally 75-80°F). A heat mat can help with germination.
Consider humidity: A humidity dome can also be beneficial.

Ideal Growing Conditions
USDA Hardiness Zones: 9B-11
Sun: Full sun is best for maximum growth and production. Can tolerate some partial shade but production will be decreased.
Soil: Everything grows best in soil that is heavy in composted organic matter BUT this plant grows just fine in a variety of soils without amendments, like native Florida sandy soil.
Water: Monitor young plants and keep consistent water.
Fertilizer: Not really necessary for mature plants, but for young/smaller plants I recommend mixing in some granular fertilizer into the planting hole.
