Fig-Leaved Mixed Hollyhock – Alcea ficifolia
If you love hollyhocks and are looking for something a little different, we present the Fig-Leaved Hollyhock, a hardy perennial relative of the classic Alcea rosea. Unlike the familiar common hollyhock, Alcea ficifolia bears deeply lobed, fig-like foliage that gives the plant a distinctive texture and sets it apart in the border. Its strong, upright stalks rise 5–7 feet tall and are covered with large, single blooms in a cheerful mix of yellow, rose, pink, red, and white.

Whereas Alcea rosea often behaves as a biennial, the fig-leaved hollyhock is a true perennial, reliably returning year after year when grown in full sun and well-drained soil. Hardy and less prone to rust than its cousin, this variety is especially well-suited to cottage gardens, back borders, and naturalized plantings. A pollinator favorite, it draws in bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds with its abundant blossoms.

Height: 5–7 feet

Bloom Time: Summer through early fall

Life Cycle: Perennial (more reliably perennial than A. rosea)

Light: Full sun

Uses: Borders, cottage gardens, pollinator plantings

A long-lived, resilient hollyhock with uniquely sculpted leaves and radiant mixed blooms, Fig-Leaved Hollyhock offers the grace of a cottage classic with the staying power of a true perennial.

The seeds look healthy and arrived very quickly. I won't put them in the soil until the Fall, but fingers crossed they grown strong and healthy!

I’m a first time customer with SeedCult this year (2026) and I’ve purchased a wide variety of their seeds. The ones I’ve planted thus far have had excellent germination rates. I have no doubt that when I plant hollyhock seeds from them I’ll have just as much success with them as well. I’ve learned from experience that I’m not very good at cold stratification, which hollyhocks require if planting in the Spring. I’ve had a lot of success with such seeds planting them in the Fall and allowing Wyoming Winters to do that work for me. I know how to store seeds successfully over the years. I’ve tucked these hollyhock seeds in a cool, dark place to wait for Fall planting.
