THE WORK
Sascha Schneider (German, 1870–1927)
Hypnosis (Hypnose)

Most sources date it to 1904, the year Schneider became a professor at the art school in Weimar. He pictured hypnosis as a physical force: a long-haired man holds a young man's wrist, and his will seems to pass into him as light. When his partner, the painter Hellmuth Jahn, began to blackmail him over his homosexuality, then a crime in Germany, Schneider left for Italy, where it was not. He also designed covers for Karl May's adventure novels and, after 1918, co-founded Kraft-Kunst, a bodybuilding institute where some of his models trained. More than a century later, the image resurfaced in a scene of Robert Eggers's film The Lighthouse (2019).
