Orpheus in Hades shows the poet who sang his way into the underworld to bring his wife back, and was given one rule he could not keep.
A woven 100% cotton tapestry blanket and wall hanging of Orpheus (Orphée) by Pierre Amédée Marcel-Béronneau, c. 1897–99.

THE WORK
Pierre Amédée Marcel-Béronneau (French, 1869–1937)
Orpheus (Orphée), known as Orpheus in Hades
c. 1897–1899 · oil on canvas
Collection: Musée des Beaux-Arts, Marseille
Not affiliated with or endorsed by the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille.

Orpheus's song moved the god of the dead, who let Eurydice follow him home on one condition: he must not turn around, or speak to her, until they reached daylight. He turned around and lost her forever. Marcel-Béronneau, whom Gustave Moreau counted among his best students, paints him pale and alone against the dark, the gold lyre held close to his head, as if he were listening to it rather than playing. Around him the underworld flickers in copper red and green. The Marseille museum notes that the picture, shown at the Paris Salon of 1899, still clearly carries Moreau's influence.
