"As we have said, books on magic seem to be largely made up of quotations from and comments on other books on magic, and this, in the end, gives very little enlightenment. People who enquire into the subject are disappointed by this negative result. They want to know not merely what magic is, but how it may be practised. To be able to do a thing oneself is much more satisfying to many of us than simply to hear or read about what other people have seen or done."

This book explores the principles, disciplines, and techniques involved in magical training, drawing from Butler’s extensive experience in the mystical traditions, particularly the teachings of Dion Fortune and the Society of the Inner Light. It is scarce to find from this print year, especially in good condition.

This book reveals in detail, for the first time, the training to be undergone by one who aspires to be a practitioner of the true Magical Art. Here are described the exercises in concentration and visualisation, the rites and magical implements, together with the practices which the aspirant must perfect before he is able to control the little-known but natural forces of magic. This book is not for those who seek sensation. It has been written by one who has himself followed the magical path as a guide for the serious student of this aspect of Occultism.

Chapter 1.
"The question may be asked, "Why another book on Magic? Surely there are too many already written. In any case, they are all cut from the same piece-they are all descriptive of other people's experience and simply mean that their respective authors take in each other's literary washing."
This particular question was, in point of fact, put by a friend of many years' standing. Although, of course, it is an exaggerated description of the situation, there is an element of truth in it, and it made the present writer endeavour to think the matter out.
The trouble is that magic has lain so long under a cloud of superstition, ignorance and fear on the one hand, and on the other, been obscured by a smoke-screen of secrecy engineered by those who feared loss of power and prestige if the subject was brought into the light, that it is very difficult for the average writer to do more than give a general outline of the subject. He is compelled to draw his material from the published work of others, who were also under the same limitation.
The position was further complicated by the fact that terrible oaths of secrecy muzzled those who could have given a first-hand account, and the breaking of an initiation oath is no light matter. Of course, some did break their oath of silence and loyalty, but as a general rule, they did so not to enlighten the general public but to enhance their own power. Although they purported to give out all the secrets, they retained specific essential keys. They then formed around themselves groups, sworn to secrecy and obedience, and the whole story was repeated."
