Highlights

Penstemon flowers are native to North America and are easily recognized by their tall, slender spikes of tubular, two-lipped blossoms. Known by the common name "beardtongue," a reference to the small, sterile stamen inside the flower that is often covered in tiny hairs, this versatile genus boasts around 250 species. Their flower colors range widely, including vibrant shades of red, blue, purple, pink, and white. Many penstemon species are highly adaptable and drought-tolerant, making them a popular choice for rock gardens and native plant landscapes. These nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for pollinators, especially hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.

Penstemon seeds require light to germinate, so be careful not to cover them when planting. Press flower seeds into soil, but do not cover. Keep seeds moist until germination, or 14 to 30 days.
If directly sowing seeds in the fall, loosen the soil and scatter the seed thinly on top.
To start indoors, following a two to four week cold treatment, sow seeds in starter trays or small pots eight weeks before the last spring frost, Penstemon seeds require a period of cold weather, called stratification. After the danger of frost has passed, harden off the seedlings and transplant them into your garden.

To directly sow outdoors, plant in late fall. Seeds will receive a natural cold stratification while they lay dormant through the winter.

First seeds I've ever purchased on etsy that were actually padded to prevent them from being crushed during transit!
