Materials: Pine
Width: 11 inches

Height: 2 inches

Pine needles, coiled by hand into something warm and sturdy.

This pine needle basket is made from longleaf pine needles, bundled and coiled round and round from a small yellow jewel at the center. The brown and burnt orange accents spiral across the floor, and a diamond net of dark thread climbs the flared outer wall.

It is 11 inches across, a wide, shallow tray that sits flat on a small foot rim. It is very tight and sturdy, and the shape is crisp. Use it on a table for keys, fruit, bread or dried flowers, or hang it on a wall as a piece of natural texture.

A woven label on the basket reads “Hand Made by Vivian Evans.”

A LITTLE HISTORY

Coiled pine needle baskets are a long Southern tradition. Longleaf pine needles are long and flexible, so they coil neatly, and makers have used them for generations. NCpedia traces the craft in North Carolina to many centuries of Native American basketry with local plants. I don’t know this maker or the age of the basket, so I’m describing it as handmade and labeled.

Excellent. Tight, sturdy and clean, with no loose coils that I can see. A few fine loose fibers on the wall are part of the material. The jewel is secure. Look closely at all the photos and ask me anything.
