In Dante's Paradiso the blessed are seated as the petals of one vast white rose, and in Canto XXXI Beatrice leaves Dante to take her place in it.

Doré keeps Dante and Beatrice together, small at the bottom of the plate. Above them, rings of countless winged figures turn around a single point of light. Dante compares these angels to a swarm of bees that sink into the great flower and rise again toward God. Later in the same canto he turns to speak to Beatrice and finds an old man in her place: Saint Bernard, his last guide. Dante looks up and sees her, already seated in the rose. Far off as she seems, she smiles and looks at him once more, then turns back toward God. Doré designed the scene; engravers cut it in wood for the 1868 edition.
