DETAILS-
This is a mid-nineteenth century appliqué quilt that has been dated and initialed. The initials read 'AMD.' This inscription was embroidered into one corner. In very small stitches, a date appears near the initials. It presumably reads '1855' or '1858.' It is incredible to have this documentation on the quilt!

This quilt has been hand appliquéd in printed green and red fabric. The pattern is known as 'Rose Wreath.' This quilt contains 9 Rose Wreathes framed by a meandering vine border with the same red and green fabrics.

This quilt measures approximately 92 x 93.5 inches. It was hand appliquéd. The quilt was hand quilted using white thread and the quilting stitches measure approximately 9 SPI (stitches per inch)!  The quilting pattern varies throughout the quilt with some double bar quilting, cross-hatch patterns, and echo quilting. The back fabric is white but has turned to cream over time. The binding is white with red piping which is typically seen in mid-ninetieth century quilts.

CONDITION
This quilt is in good antique condition considering it is well over 150 years old! There is overall tanning where the once white fabric has dulled to a cream throughout. The photos were taken in natural light and read whiter than the quilt really is. There is a 14 inch tear that has been mended with tiny hand stitches. Some slight fabric deterioration has occurred throughout the appliqué which is typical to see in older pieces.  The binding has some breaks along the fabric but is mostly intact. There are blue ink quilting lines which leads me to believe the quilt has never been largely used or washed. There are a few stains present to include a water mark in one corner. The back shows discoloration from age but is in overall good condition. Many hands have carefully preserved this piece. Thank you for continuing its preservation!

This quilt will be sold as-is. It was not washed. Machine washing is not recommended.
