Its elegant, elongated neck and wide, globe-shaped base are classic of the water carafe form, used during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to serve water or wine at the table or bedside. The smooth lip and lack of rim wear confirm that no stopper was ever made for this design — this is its original form, not a decanter missing a piece.
