The Giant Isopod (Bathynomus giganteus) is one of the strangest creatures in the modern ocean. Living at crushing depths of 600 to 7,000 feet, it's a relative of the common woodlouse — but blown up to nearly the size of a small cat. Pale, segmented, ancient-looking, and almost mythological in proportion, it's a creature that looks like it shouldn't exist but does.
