Highlights
Bring an ancient yet fresh twist to your life with a collection that makes the past feel close.
Inside you’ll find three seed packets featuring real plants once grown across the Viking North. Angelica, Cress, and Nettle were once staples in the Viking Age, and now you can grow them in your own home. You get new flavors, real history, and a fun project for anyone. These plants brighten up a windowsill, fit into a backyard garden seamlessly, and add a unique twist to cooking.
NOTE: Angelica seeds are short lived and should be refrigerated until sowing to ensure maximum viability.
Imagine:
- Harvesting Angelica, the very plant Thorgeir clung to on a cliffside in Fóstbrœðra saga, and tasting its same earthy leaves and stems.
- Cooking Nettle, the stinging plant transformed by fire into flavorful dense greens.
- Tasting Cress, the bold little herb found sealed inside the Oseberg ship burial, chosen as one of the few plants worthy to accompany real Vikings into the afterlife.
Simple, True-to-Origins Growing:
- These plants are true northern species, adapted to harsh Northern climates. A short cold-start (stratification) recreates the environment they come from.
- Clear, simple steps printed on every packet to guide you through it.
- Once sprouted, they are rugged, fast-growing, non-GMO varieties.
What's Included?
- 3 seed packets with manuscript-style artwork and easy to follow instructions.
- Hand packaged in eco-friendly, rustic kraft paper packets
- 100 Cress seeds, 100 Nettle seeds, 75 Angelica seeds.
Perfect Gift:
- A truly unique experience for anyone, designed to look as good on the shelf as the ground. Ideal for Viking/Medieval or history lovers, fantasy readers, cottagecore girlies, Norse mythology fans, D&D players, Renaissance Faire/LARPers, aesthetic chasers, cooking enthusiasts, and anyone obsessed with the Viking North.
Full Details:
- Angelica (Angelica archangelica): Viking green and one of the few plants documented across every layer of Norse record. In Fóstbrœðra saga, Thorgeir literally hangs from an angelica stalk when the ground collapses beneath him. In Óláfs Saga Tryggvasonar, its hollow stem is used as a tool of execution. Outside the sagas, angelica was a practical food source: leaves and stems were eaten raw or cooked, especially in northern regions where few greens survived the climate. The plant grows tall, with thick, hollow stalks and large green umbels, and its flavor sits somewhere between earthy herb and mild licorice. The stems can also be candied for a Norse inspired treat. Seeds are short lived and should be refrigerated until sowing to ensure maximum viability.
- Nettle (Urtica dioica): Abundant, fast-growing Viking leafy green, edible despite its reputation. Once boiled or wilted by heat, it became a nutrient-dense green commonly cooked into soups and teas. In the Old English Herbarium, nettle is described as a plant that “fights against cold,” its reputation crossing both Norse and Anglo-Saxon lines. Vikings would've gathered it along rivers, fields, and settlement edges. Tall, serrated, and covered in fine stinging hairs, its cooked leaves have a refreshing, earthy spinach-like flavor. Deadheading flower clusters and occasional trimming keeps nettle compact and prevents spreading/excess self-seeding. (Always handle raw with gloves)
- Cress (Lepidium sativum): Viking herb and one of the plants physically found in a Viking burial. Seeds were discovered in a small wooden box aboard the Oseberg ship, a high-status grave dating to the early ninth century. The plant grows quickly, is easy to cultivate, and delivers a sharp, peppery flavor that made it useful in areas with short growing seasons. Low-growing with fine leaves, it matures fast and fades quickly, which aligns with its role in the Viking North.
*Modern cultivars of historically documented plant species. No representation is made or implied that the seeds themselves are of Viking or ancient origin/lineage.
Thank you for visiting our shop! We hope you enjoy these storied plants as much as we do. Many of our varieties have long histories of culinary use. As with anything you grow or consume, please prepare appropriately, enjoy in moderation, and be mindful of individual tolerances. Certain varieties may contain naturally occurring oxalates, just as many modern and familiar crops do. If you are sensitive to oxalates or have been advised to avoid high-oxalate foods, please review each plant before use. If you are pregnant, nursing, or unsure whether a new plant is the right fit for you, we recommend checking with a qualified professional.
