Circa 1840 early Victorian diamond cluster ring.

The face a circular cluster of 29 tall-crowned old mine-cut diamonds, together weighing approximately 0.72 ctw, each in cut-down silver collets over a closed, foiled back, the head of starburst outline with a subtle quatrefoil to the center. The lovely foliate openwork shoulders is of a laurel-leaf design, the setting bezel worked in silver over a setting body of solid 18k yellow gold (tested). Ring size 7¼, weight 4.7 grams.

This ring belongs to the very early Victorian period but preserves the earlier Georgian practice of setting diamonds in silver-topped gold with foiled closed backs, a technique used to heighten the play of light in softly proportioned mine cuts. The laurel shoulders reflect the period’s interest in naturalistic motifs and classical symbolism, while the tightly pavé-set cluster recalls late Georgian diamond rings that remained in favor in the 1830s–40s.

Please see below for the full specs and measurement details:

Date: c. 1840, early Victorian era

Ring size: USA 7.25, UK N ½, EU 55 (resizable via laser welder—contact me for more info)

Materials: old mine cut diamonds, solid 18k yellow gold (shoulders, back, part of shank), 14k yellow gold (small extra section added during resizing) [unmarked; tested with electronic gold tester]

Weight: 4.7 grams

Workmanship origin: British

Dimension of diamonds: 29 total at around 1.8 mm (approx 0.725 ctw)

Diameter of ring head: 11.6 mm

Width of shank: 2 - 3 mm

Depth of shank: 1 - 1.3 mm

Condition: this ring has been sized up or quarter re-shanked in the past; a ~14 mm section to the back shank tests as 14k gold. However, the work is well-done, seamless, and thus not detectable with the naked eye. The foiling to about 4 diamonds has tarnished to a dark gray. All 29 diamonds appear to be original (matched cuts, not later brilliants mixed in). Per historical standard, the diamonds have various natural flaws like inclusions. However, under loupe magnification, I did not spot any chips or other major flaws. Age-related patina and light surface wear throughout.

Please view the video and examine all pictures carefully, as they are part of the condition report. Please note that all antique objects, due to their age, can be well-worn, well-loved, and somewhat imperfect. It is my goal to catalogue these imperfections as carefully as possible.
