Crochet Hood/Balaclava/Bonnet PDF Pattern (Kåre Hood)

This is the pdf pattern for the Kåre Hood, a versatile pattern that can be used to make either a balaclava (closed ribbing in the front) or a bonnet (open ribbing with ties in the front). Regardless of what version you make you’ll end up with a warm and cozy hood! The pattern is suited for advanced beginners and up, where using more than one color will increase the difficulty a little. There are three adult sizes but it can also be modified quite easily if you want to adjust the size somewhat. It is crocheted in one piece with minimal seaming, and the main stitches used are single crochets and slip stitches.

MATERIALS
- Worsted weight yarn that is nice and soft on the skin.
- I used Alpaca 3 by Isager (125 m/50 g)
- Other examples are Heavy Merino by Knitting for Olive, Soft by Isager or Gilliatt by De Rerum Natura.
- For sizes (1,2,3) you’ll need approximately:
- (130,175,220) m for the main part of the hood
- (60,75,100) m for the ribbing/straps
- Crochet hook:
- 5.5 mm or hook needed to meet gauge
- 4.5 mm or 1.0 mm smaller than your main hook
- Yarn needle/Darning needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers

SIZES
There are 3 adult sizes to choose from based on your head size. In the table in the listing photos are the measurements of the finished balaclava/bonnet, as well as the suggested head circumference for each size. My head is 57 cm around so I did a size 2 but I could definitely have made a size 1 as well if I wanted it to fit a little more snug, or a size 3 if I wanted to fit a beanie underneath.

GAUGE
16 stitches x 20 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4x4 inches) of "seed slip stitch blo" with a 5.5 mm hook (or hook needed to meet gauge).
