"The Black Dwarf" is a gothic tale by Sir Walter Scott, set in the Scottish Borders after the 1707 Union. It follows the reclusive, deformed hermit Sir Edward Mauley (the Black Dwarf), who becomes entangled in a plot involving a threatened marriage, Jacobite schemes, and a feud between families. The dwarf uses his mysterious influence to prevent a forced marriage and secure a happy ending for the young lovers, ultimately revealing his true identity as a wealthy nobleman and then disappearing.
