About this item

"The only book in any language to provide descriptions of thousands of angels."

A rare and genuine 1st paperback edition (not the Canadian release, no offense, Canada). It is in good condition. Including over 3,400 entries, over 100 fine engravings, and one of the most extensive compendia of literature ever compiled on angels from any time in history. This volume is stamped as a first edition and also has the publisher's number line descending from 10 to 1, 1 denoting the first edition.
A very clean book, all I could find was a crease to the rear cover.

Well-preserved, and it's now 54 years old. Please note that this is not one of the redos from 1972 or 1994, nor a modern rendition; it is the original 1st edition softcover, which is exceptionally scarce because most surviving copies are later editions. Including one of the most beautiful collections of fine engravings you will find in any book on angels, dating back centuries, including the works of Gustave Doré, Raphael, Rembrandt, Manet, Botticelli, Titian, William Blake, and more, dating to the 15th century (1400s).

Here are just "some" of the subjects discussed: angelic invocation, spells, charms, spirit conjuring, spirit incantations, sigils, exorcism, the Book of Enoch, the Holy Grail, alchemy, pentacles, the angels of the zodiac, the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant, the astral plane, divination, planetary and lunar angels, ceremonial magic, the Kabbalah, the fallen angels, other realms, the orders of angels, the Grimoire of Honorius, the archangels, the celestial heavens, the mystical name of God, the Watchers, the seals of angels, the names of Lilith, the magic circle, invocation, the Koran, the Old and New Testaments, the Book of Ceremonial Magic, heaven, the Creator, the angel of death, the Garden of Eden, the angel of herbs, heaven and hell, immortality, metaphysics, mysticism, the angel of oracles, the fallen angels of Enoch, archangels, guardian angels, amulets, the ancient alphabet of angels, the Tree of Life, and more.

Regarding books on angels, I have a "few" dating back well over a century. However, there is none so extensive, well-researched, and in-depth as this. It lists over 1,000 angels and delves deeper with sections on spells, angelic invocation, occult science, and magic. This printing is the original first edition, not a later redo or paperback. This may be a book of angels, but it includes more passages on other realms, ancient grimoire, and spirituality. This monumental book results from sixteen years of research in Talmudic, gnostic, cabalistic, apocalyptic, patristic, and legendary texts. They don't make them this good anymore, and probably never will. I would snag this one before it's gone...

The overall condition of this book is very good despite being well over half a century old. The cover and spine are very lovely; however, the rear cover has a crease. This book is complete, well-bound, and remarkably well-preserved.

"Angels perform a multiplicity of duties and tasks. Preeminently, they serve God. But many serve men directly as guardians, counselors, guides, judges, interpreters, cooks, dragomen, matchmakers, and gravediggers. In occult lore, angels are conjured up to help an invocant strengthen his faith, heal his afflictions, find lost articles, increase his worldly goods, acquire offspring, and circumvent and destroy an enemy... St. Augustine went so far as to declare that 'every visible thing in this world is put under the charge of an angel?'"
—from the INTRODUCTION

Compounded with wit and learning, A Dictionary of Angels is the only book in any language to provide descriptions and "biographical facts" of thousands of angels and fallen angels. Documented and enlivened with 105 illustrations, an extensive Bibliography, and an Appendix containing pacts, sigils, charms, invocations, exorcisms, and much more, A Dictionary of Angels will be a treasured addition to every library. In his comprehensive Introduction, Gustav Davidson poses and answers many of the intriguing questions that arose during fifteen years of research in Talmudic, gnostic, cabalistic, apocalyptic, patristic, and legendary texts: If the Bible names only two or three angels, where are the other angels to be found?

How are their names derived?
» What language do angels speak?
» How many winged creatures exist in the world, and did God create them all?
What is the fate of fallen angels?
A Dictionary of Angels will captivate and entertain every reader and provide them with information unobtainable elsewhere. This valuable compendium probes a marvelous and little-known aspect of our spiritual, literary, and mythological heritage in an area dear to Dante, Shakespeare, and Milton and essential to three of the world's great religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism).

INCLUDING:
3,406 entries identifying and describing a host of angels and fallen angels.
One hundred five illustrations from a wide range of sources— paintings, manuscripts, and old prints.
A nineteen-page introduction reviews the history, language, habits, characteristics, and names of angels.
An illustrated appendix listing pacts, sigils, invocations, spells, charms, exorcisms, and other curiosa.
A twenty-five-page bibliography of angel lore.
The result of fifteen years of research in comprehensive entries from A'albiel to Zuriel.

Introduction
Some years ago, when I started "collecting" angels as a literary diversion, it was undoubtedly with no thought of serving as their archivist, biographer, and, finally, a lexicographer. Such an idea did not occur to me; it could only have happened to me once I had corralled a sufficient number of the heavenly denizens to make a dictionary of them feasible. At first, I thought that angels, named angels, were to be found only in the Bible. I soon learned that, on the contrary, the Bible was the last place to look for them. True, angels are mentioned frequently enough in both the Old and New Testaments, but they are not named, save in two or three instances. Virtually all the named angels in this compilation are culled from sources outside Scripture.'

Of the books in the New Testament, while the Synoptic Gospels and the Pauline Epistles have been longtime favorites of mine, the book of Revelation always held a particular fascination for me, mainly because, I believe, of its apocalyptic imagery and involvement with angels. I read the book often. But one day, as I was leafing through its pages, my eye was arrested by verse 2, chapter 8: And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.
I laid the book aside and asked myself: Who are these seven holy ones that stand before God?
Has any biblical scholar identified them? Are they of the order of seraphim, cherubim, principalities, or powers? And are they always the same seven who enjoy the privilege and eminence of closest proximity to the throne of Glory? And why seven? Were the seven planets the prototype? Or did the notion derive from the well-known chapter in Ezekiel 9 2-11, which gives a terrifying picture of six "men" and a seventh "clothed in linen" whom God summoned to brook? Over the years, it unlocked realms of gold I never suspected existed in Heaven or on Earth.

Gustav Davidson (December 25, 1895 – February 6, 1971) was an American poet, writer, and publisher. He was a one-time secretary of the Poetry Society of America. This book, "The Dictionary of Angels," is considered one of his most monumental works. This book was published in 1967.
