This original New Mexico landscape oil painting, “Under a High Country August Sky,” was inspired by a meandering drive along NM Hwy 64 west of Tres Piedras, on the way to Chama.

I had never imagined the northern New Mexico landscape up here would open into such expansive high‑mountain meadows. These are the wide, rolling fields I usually associate with lower elevations, yet there they were—high, wide spaces inviting my imagination to sweep across them.

From the road I’d catch sight of an old cowboy shack or forgotten cabin tucked along a creek bend or at the base of a golden hillside, further inviting my mind to wander and dream. And always, those late‑summer clouds drifted overhead, casting a shifting play of shadow and light across the sky and land.

This is an original, one‑of‑a‑kind painting by Dawn Chandler.
