I photographed this south bay shack deep in the marshland of Great South Bay, where there are no roads and access is only possible by water. These structures were built directly into the marsh over a century ago, long before modern development reached the area.
This particular shack is estimated to be more than 100 years old. Fewer than two dozen of these bay shacks remain today, and each year storms claim more of them. As I studied the scene, the weathered posts rising from the water revealed where a deck once stood, marking past water levels and showing how the bay has steadily changed over time.
I waited as the light dropped and the sky opened above the marsh, allowing the warm reflections to move across the water. I captured the image to document both the structure and its surroundings, preserving a moment in the slow disappearance of these historic bay shacks as storms and rising water continue to reshape the landscape.
