I photographed this scene at sunset as ice began forming across the bay along Long Island Sound. As a kid, I remember winters when this water would freeze solid, turning the bay into a sheet of ice for weeks at a time.
With warmer temperatures now, moments like this have become rare. Seeing the ice return, even briefly, immediately caught my attention. The low winter sun reflected across the frozen surface, blending warm sunset light with the cold textures of ice and water.
I took my time framing the scene, knowing how unusual it has become. What mattered most was preserving the contrast between memory and reality—between what winter once was and what it has slowly become. This photograph captures a fleeting moment of stillness, ice, and light that felt important to hold onto.
