Natural Ethiopian Oil Opal Rough Loose Gemstone, Crystal Opal Rough Stone for Jewelry Making 95 Ct. (60X33X12 MM)

Name:- Ethiopian Oil Opal
Weight:- 95 Ct.
Shape:- Rough
Size:- 60X33X12 MM

Rough opal is unprocessed natural opal that typically has a rough, unpolished, and irregular surface. It is often still embedded in its host rock, or matrix, and its true potential for color and brilliance is usually hidden until it is cut and polished.
Key Physical Characteristics
Appearance: Rough opals are anhedral, meaning they have no defined crystal faces, and come in irregular shapes, masses, or nodules. The surface is generally not smooth or polished and can range from rugged to somewhat smooth depending on extraction methods and the host rock.
Body Tone and Color: The outer or "body" color can be dull and earthy, or it can be white, grey, black, brown, yellow, red, orange, green, or blue. The base tone can be light or dark, which influences the vibrancy of the play-of-color in precious opals.
Play-of-Color (Fire): The most prized feature, "play-of-color", refers to the distinctive flashes of spectral hues that shift when the stone is moved. In rough opals, this effect can be visible but is often subdued or concentrated in small areas until the stone is cut and polished to maximize its display.
Transparency: Opals can be transparent, translucent, or opaque. Crystal opals are transparent to semi-transparent, while white opals are typically translucent to opaque with a milky appearance.
Host Rock (Matrix): Raw opals are often found embedded in a host rock like sandstone, ironstone, or basalt. In some types, like boulder opal, the opal forms in thin veins within the matrix, and the host rock becomes a natural part of the finished gem.
Inclusions: Natural imperfections, such as impurities or other minerals trapped within the stone, are common in rough opals. These can include sand spots, potch (common opal material with no play-of-color), or organic material in the case of opalized fossils.
Weight and Density: Opals have a relatively low specific gravity compared to many other gemstones, so they may feel lighter than expected for their size.
Types of Rough Opal
Black Opal: Found primarily in Lightning Ridge, Australia, these have a dark body tone (dark gray to blue-black) that enhances the vividness of the play-of-color.
White Opal: The most common type, typically found in Coober Pedy, South Australia, with a white or light gray body tone.
Boulder Opal: Characterized by a layer of precious opal within a natural ironstone host rock, mined mainly in Queensland, Australia.
Fire Opal: These opals have a warm body color (yellow, orange, or red) and may or may not display play-of-color; the most famous source is Mexico.
Hydrophane Opal: Originating commonly from Ethiopia (Welo region), these porous opals can absorb water, becoming transparent and often revealing their play-of-color when wet, and turning milky white and opaque when dry.
