Vintage porcelain bust “USSR Cosmonaut” produced by Promysly Verbilok
(former Dmitrov Porcelain Factory), Russia, mid-1990s.

This piece reflects the transitional period of Russian porcelain art during the 1990s.
After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, the historic Dmitrov Porcelain Factory was privatised
and reorganised as “Farfor Verbilok”, while its artistic production continued under the brand
“Promysly Verbilok”.

In the mid-1990s, the factory launched a nostalgic series of small sculptural works dedicated
to Soviet achievements. The “USSR Cosmonaut” bust became part of this series, using heroic
imagery of the Soviet past for the emerging souvenir and collectable market of post-Soviet Russia.

The bust represents a generic image of a Soviet cosmonaut wearing a helmet marked “USSR”.
Collectors often associate the facial features with Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space,
and the early Space Race era, although this piece is not an official portrait of him.

The sculpture is made of glazed white porcelain. The smooth, glossy surface enhances the
sculptural details of the spacesuit and facial features while giving the bust a clean,
classical appearance. The absence of painted decoration emphasises form and volume.

The underside bears the official “Promysly Verbilok” factory mark with a moose head.
This is the official trademark of JSC “Farfor Verbilok” and confirms that the piece was
produced at the historic Gardner porcelain factory site, already in the post-Soviet period.
