Weather Lacing Cards for Little Hands

In my 10 years working in early childhood education, lacing cards have always been my go-to activity. They are simple, quick to prepare and so easy for little ones to pick up. I have seen toddlers spend 20 minutes on a single card, completely focused, pulling the string through one hole after another. That kind of calm, independent play is exactly why I made this set.

These cards bring the sky right to your table: a bright sun, a fluffy snow cloud, a stormy rain cloud, a soft rainbow and gentle wind swirls. They make a lovely weather activity for a preschool winter theme, a rainy afternoon at home or a quiet corner in your classroom.

Why preschool lacing is such a good fine motor activity
Lacing looks easy, but it asks a lot of small hands. Children hold the card with one hand and guide the string with the other, which builds hand strength, hand eye coordination and the pincer grasp they will need later to hold a pencil. It is a classic Montessori practical life skill and one of my favorite preschool fine motor ideas because it naturally slows children down. Many children even start learning to tie with the laces once the card is done.

What you will receive
• 12 weather lacing cards
• English and French versions, a handy bilingual printable
• 2 versions: one with holes to punch yourself, one printer friendly version
• High resolution PDF, US Letter and A4
• Instant digital download

Who it is for
Toddlers and preschoolers ages 2 to 6, at home, in homeschool preschool, at daycare or in a Montessori toddler classroom. The cards also slip easily into a busy bag or a busy book printable binder for car rides, restaurants and waiting rooms. Pair them with your weather printable posters or a fine motor bundle for a full week of hands-on learning.

How I prepare them
Print on cardstock, laminate, then punch the holes with a regular hole punch. Tie a knot at one end of a shoelace or a piece of yarn and wrap a little tape around the other end so it slides through easily. For younger toddlers, start with the cards that have fewer holes.

Teacher tip: offer one card at a time and keep the others in a small envelope. Choosing the next card becomes part of the fun and keeps this quiet time activity going a little longer. It is one of those toddler activities that works every single time, a true montessori activity that needs almost nothing, and a sweet addition to your preschool curriculum.

A sweet learning weather activity for little hands.
