Book description:
The Memoirs of Satan (1932), collated by William Gerhardi and Brian Lunn, is a satirical novel where Satan recounts the history of mankind from his perspective. As a "collaborator" of God with an independent spirit, he narrates his involvement in biblical stories and historical events, eventually becoming a weary old man living in a London boarding house.
Key Details of the Book:
Narrative Perspective: Satan provides his version of events, including the fall of man, the destruction of Sodom, and the trials of Job.
Historical Satire: The narrative covers Satan "possessing" historical figures like Nero, Caliph of Bagdad, Cromwell, Marie Antoinette, and Napoleon.
Tone: It is described as a witty, fast-paced, and intellectual "lost masterpiece," offering a fresh, often cynical slant on history and religion.
Plotline: It tracks Satan's journey from the Ice Age to his final days in a Bayswater boarding house before being cremated.
Style: It is considered a difficult book to categorize, often suggested as a book to "dip into" rather than read consecutively.
Note: This description refers to the 1932 novel by Gerhardi/Lunn. It should not be confused with Wilhelm Hauff's 1826 work of a similar name.
