Highlights
A finely observed drawing depicting Venice’s distinctive waterfront architecture, rendered with confident, economical line work and a strong sense of perspective. The artist emphasizes structure, reflection, and atmosphere rather than surface detail, lending the scene a quiet, timeless presence.
The hand is skilled and assured, clearly that of a trained artist working from direct observation. This is a genuine early 20th-century work on paper, not a reproduction or later decorative piece.
Details
• Medium: Pen and ink on paper
• Date: 1910
• Signature: Signed and dated
• Subject: Venetian architectural cityscape
• Unframed
Condition
Light, even age toning consistent with age. A small remnant from earlier mounting is visible from the front and on the verso; the paper is stable and the image presents well overall.
Provenance
From the estate of Malvina Hoffman (1885–1966), a prominent American sculptor active in the early 20th century. The drawing was preserved among her papers in a folder titled “Other People’s Work,” indicating material retained by her but not created by her. Hoffman traveled to Europe in 1910, including time in Italy, which provides historical context for the date and subject of this work.
This drawing would frame attractively either on its own or as part of a gallery wall, and it offers the character and authenticity of an early 20th-century European work on paper at an intimate, collectible scale.
