Full size late C19th Antique French inlaid wood Walnut Marquetry Backgammon Board with Boxwood Pieces

This is an exceptional example of a beautifully preserved marquetry backgammon board from around 1910, when jacquet/backgammon was immensely popular in France and throughout Europe. It stands as one of the better examples of craftsmanship I have encountered.

This handmade magnificent C19th French walnut backgammon game has a beautiful unique cream and pistache marquetry (inlaid wood) playing surface playing surface which is in extraordinary condition for its age. The outer surface of the board has a magnificent marquetry chess or checkers board, which is, beside 1 small wine spill spots, in great condition. I have rarely seen a game of this antiquity in such a good state, for the marquetry playing surface internal (the backgammon board) as well as the outer side (chess / checkers board) are both in remarkable fine condition.

It is a full-size board measuring (open), 71 cms (28”) long, by 52 cms (20 1/2”) wide. A heavy weight giant.

The playing pieces are 2” (5,2cm) diameter and made from solid French boxwood and have a magnificent grain. The two matching original leather die cups also have a wonderful patina. The game comes complete with a set of dice which I assume is original or from same time period completing this remarkable ensemble. (The set comes with 2 separate complementary linen GammonAncien bags to store the stones inside the closed board).

This board is equally beautiful as an ‘objet d’art’ laid out on your coffee table - or as a rare playing board for the backgammon enthusiast. Just breathe in the heritage of 19th-century French craftsmanship with this board, a luxurious ‘objet d’art’ for your coffee table, its timeless design transporting you to a Provençal evening—roll the dice, indulge in a crisp Sancerre, and let the game unfold amid rustic elegance.
