Clematis ‘Piilu’ (Little Duck) is a highly popular and beginner-friendly clematis variety that combines beauty with easy care. It’s especially suitable for balconies or small gardens, producing charming, fairy-like blooms.

✨ Variety Features

Flower Form & Color:
The flowers are delicate and elegant. Petals are soft pink with deeper pink stripes running down the center. The color shifts with light conditions — appearing more lavender-purple in strong sun and softer pink in shade.
On old wood, it may produce semi-double blooms, while new growth typically bears single flowers.

Plant Habit:
Compact and well-branched with abundant blooms, it easily creates a “flower explosion” effect. Although often described as dwarf, it can actually reach 2–2.5 meters (6.5–8 feet). A support structure about 1.2–1.5 meters (4–5 feet) tall is recommended.

Blooming Habit:
The main flowering season is in spring, with a lighter flush again in autumn. Each individual flower can last around 20 days

Light:
Clematis are sun-loving plants and need at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Insufficient light may result in sparse flowering or no blooms at all.

Watering:
Follow the “water when dry” principle — allow the top layer of soil to dry before watering. Reduce watering during summer heat and winter dormancy to prevent root rot.

Fertilizing:
Spring and autumn are peak growth and flowering seasons. Apply diluted liquid fertilizer weekly during these periods. Stop fertilizing during extreme heat in summer and in winter.

Pruning:
‘Piilu’ belongs to Pruning Group 2. In winter and after flowering, only light pruning is needed. Retain most of the stems and healthy buds to ensure abundant blooms the following year.

Soil & Pot:
Prefers well-draining, slightly alkaline soil. A mix of peat, leaf mold, and perlite works well, with a small amount of rice husk charcoal and bone meal added.
Choose a pot at least 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter — terracotta or nursery pots are ideal.
