In 1887, Gauguin traveled to the French Caribbean island of Martinique alongside fellow artist Charles Laval. This brief but highly productive period marks a critical transition in Gauguin's career. The vivid light and exotic flora of the tropics prompted him to adopt a more saturated colour palette and flatter, more decorative compositional structures—techniques that would fully mature during his later years in Tahiti.
