Highlights

This is an authentic late 19th to early 20th century English leather cabin trunk by Crouch & Fitzgerald, a distinguished London and New York maker of fine travel goods established in 1830. Covered entirely in rich saddle-brown leather with brass hardware and reinforced corners, this trunk would have accompanied a well-traveled gentleman on steamship voyages or railway journeys. The hand-stenciled initials “H.D.K.” on the side suggest its original owner, adding wonderful personal history and character.

Crouch & Fitzgerald was founded in London in 1830 and became known for high-quality trunks, portmanteaus, and travel cases during the golden age of travel. As transatlantic steamship travel expanded in the mid to late 1800s, English trunk makers like Crouch & Fitzgerald supplied refined travelers with durable yet elegant luggage built to withstand ship holds, rail cars, and carriage transport. Their presence in both London and New York reflects their participation in international travel markets of the period.

Historically, trunks of this type were known as cabin trunks or steamer trunks. Unlike large domed-top shipping trunks, these compact rectangular forms were designed to fit inside ship cabins or railway compartments. The leather exterior provided water resistance, while the brass hardware offered durability. The interior straps in the lid and fitted lining were meant to secure garments and folded clothing during transport.

Today, this piece makes an exceptional decorative storage trunk, statement coffee table base, or collector’s display piece. It would be stunning in a study, library, nautical-themed room, or entryway. The warm patina and travel wear tell a story that modern reproductions simply cannot replicate.

We love the rich, worn leather surface which has developed an extraordinary patina with decades of honest travel wear. The brass hardware has aged beautifully, and the red maker’s seal inside is a fantastic confirmation of authenticity. The hand-painted initials add character and individuality, making it feel like a true time capsule from the golden age of travel.

This trunk shows significant but attractive age-related wear. The leather exterior has scuffs, scratches, surface cracking, and areas of darkened patina consistent with long-term use. There is wear along edges and corners, and a loss area on one lower corner. The brass hardware shows oxidation and age. The interior lining is intact but shows wear, discoloration, and surface abrasions. The maker’s seal remains visible. Structurally sound overall with solid hinges and lid. This is an unrestored, authentic antique with character.

Based on construction and maker history, this trunk was most likely produced circa 1890–1910.

The measurements are:

12" High
16" Wide
15" Deep
