Seller's description

Handmade Levkas Icon Board for Orthodox Icon Painting — real chalk levkas on natural linen pavoloka, prepared by hand in Ukraine.

This board is made for iconographers who value a traditional, authentic foundation for icon painting — a living handmade surface with real character, not a factory-made synthetic surface with a perfectly uniform matte coating.

Each panel is slowly prepared by hand: a stable wooden core, natural linen pavoloka, traditional rabbit skin glue, and 12–16 layers of real chalk levkas, fully hand-applied and hand-sanded.

This is not a quick-primed mass-produced panel.

First, the natural linen pavoloka is glued to the wooden board and must dry properly. Then real chalk levkas is gradually applied over several days, layer by layer, using traditional preparation methods. Each layer needs time to dry before the next one is added.

This slow process creates a traditional absorbent surface for icon painting and gives the board depth, strength, and true handmade character.

This board is suitable for:

• Orthodox icon painting
• Byzantine iconography
• Egg tempera painting
• Traditional church art
• Iconography classes and workshops
• Professional iconographers
• Students of sacred art
• Custom religious artwork
• Home prayer icons
• Church and monastery icon projects

A true levkas board is made not only for painting today, but also to help preserve the icon for many years. With proper care and stable indoor storage, this traditional icon board can serve for decades — and in the right conditions, for generations, even 100+ years.

Please note: because each board is handmade, slight surface variations, light texture, or small signs of hand preparation may be visible. These are not defects — they are part of a true handmade levkas board and give the panel its authentic traditional character.

Custom sizes, deeper kovcheg boards, and workshop orders are welcome.

Made in Ukraine by our small family workshop, with respect for traditional Orthodox icon painting craft.

Why this review appears

All reviews are from verified buyers. This review is shown automatically based on factors like recency, whether it includes comments, your chosen language, and whether the rating reflects the typical experience with the shop.

“I have worked on many boards, but the boards of this workshop truly seem to bring me back to the 1980s, when my grandmother applied levkas to a board made by my grandfather and glued the pavoloka by hand from real linen. This is not just a well-made blank, but the true handcraft of a master who knows exactly what a good foundation for a serious icon should be. In this board, you immediately feel the solidity, the real chalk levkas rather than some accidental mixture, the proper thickness of the pavoloka, and the inner strength of this honest work. I sincerely recommend this workshop to everyone who is looking for true quality such boards cannot be found anywhere today.”

Absolutely wonderful experience. Anatoliy’s boards truly left a very strong impression on me. This is exceptionally solid, honest handcraft, and the real quality is immediately felt in the work. The foundation is strong and reliable, with very high-quality gesso that is so easy and pleasant to work on, giving a special sense of confidence while painting. For me, these are truly some of the best boards I have ever worked with. I wholeheartedly recommend these boards to our whole brotherhood and wish Anatoliy and his family all the best. I will gladly continue working with you in the future.
