Highlights
The Art of Damascus Marquetry
This exquisite piece is a testament to the centuries-old tradition of Damascus Marquetry, an art form that reached its zenith in Syria during the mid-20th century. Skilled artisans, known as "Sadafji," meticulously hand-cut thousands of tiny slivers of walnut, lemon wood, and rosewood, assembling them like a complex puzzle.
The intricate geometry seen on this box—specifically the central hexagonal stars—is deeply rooted in Islamic Art, symbolizing the infinite nature of the universe. Unlike modern mass-produced versions, this vintage humidor-style box features authentic bone inlays (not plastic), lending it a natural, sophisticated luster that has aged beautifully over decades.
Key Features & Specifications:
Craftsmanship: High-density marquetry lid with "Piano Stringing" border details.
Materials: Walnut, Rosewood, and Lemon wood with genuine hand-carved bone inlays.
Interior: Fully wood-lined, making it an ideal desktop humidor for cigars or a protective sanctuary for fine jewelry and watches.
Era: Circa 1940s-1960s (Mid-Century Vintage).
Dimensions: 24.5 cm x 15 cm (9.6" x 5.9").
Weight: Approx. 620g.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Note: Minor vintage wear to the interior inlay strips, as expected with age, which does not affect the exterior beauty.
Collector's Note:
The density of the central mosaic on this particular piece is exceptional. The wood-lined interior suggests it was commissioned as a high-end gift or a gentleman’s accessory, rather than a common souvenir.
