Yacon Plant – Rare Edible Root Crop
Smallanthus sonchifolius
Live Crown-Grown Starter Plant
Grow your own sweet, juicy yacon at home!
Yacon is a rare edible perennial root crop originally from the Andes Mountains of South America. It produces crisp, refreshing tubers often described as a mix of apple, pear, and watermelon.
These live yacon plants are grown in my Northern California backyard garden with a focus on healthy root development and strong future growth.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHY MY YACON PLANTS ARE DIFFERENT
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
These yacon plants are propagated from mature crown divisions / root crowns — NOT from seed-grown seedlings.
Yacon grown from established crown pieces is typically much more vigorous, develops faster, and has a significantly better chance of producing harvestable tubers.
At this point in the growing season, very small seedlings often spend most of their energy establishing roots and may not have enough time to form large tubers before fall.
For this reason, I currently focus on selling larger rooted crowns and stronger propagation pieces to give growers a better chance for successful tuber production by the end of the season.
Unlike tiny seed-grown seedlings, established yacon crowns have stored energy reserves that help produce stronger plants and improve the chances of forming sweet edible tubers within the same growing season.
My goal is not just to sell a plant — but to help buyers successfully grow and harvest yacon.

WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Depending on your selected option, you will receive:
• One live rooted crown-grown starter plant
• One mature Yacon crown division / propagation crown
Please note:
• Plant size, crown size, shape, and number of buds may vary
• Listing photos are reference photos only
• Crown buds may arrive dormant or partially sprouted depending on season and storage conditions
• Some cosmetic leaf damage during shipping is normal for live plants
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHY GROW YACON?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
• Easy to grow
• Vigorous and resilient
• Sweet edible tubers
• Excellent for containers
• Perennial propagation plant
• Great for home gardeners and collectors
One healthy plant can produce many crowns and propagation pieces for future growing seasons.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
GROWING CONDITIONS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Yacon grows best with:
• 6–8+ hours of sunlight
• Warm temperatures
• Regular watering
• Rich, well-draining soil
Recommended container size:
• Minimum 10 gallon
• Ideal 15–25 gallon grow bags or containers
In hot climates, afternoon shade during extreme summer heat can be beneficial.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
MY PERSONAL GROWING EXPERIENCE
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I grow yacon in Northern California with long hot summers, and it thrives here.
My personal experience is to:
• keep plants trimmed
• avoid excessive top growth
• manage dense leaves and branches
This helps redirect energy into producing larger tubers instead of excessive foliage.
I usually keep plants around 4 feet tall rather than letting them grow excessively large.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
TRANSPLANT & CARE
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
After arrival:
• Water thoroughly
• Keep in bright shade for 5–7 days
• Gradually introduce to stronger sunlight
If leaves become wilted during shipping or transplant:
• remove damaged leaves
• keep soil lightly moist
• new growth usually appears quickly
Yacon is a very resilient plant once established.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
GROWING SEASON
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
In California and other long-season climates, yacon can continue growing until late fall or early winter.
Even late-season planting can still establish strong crowns for future harvests.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
SHIPPING
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Plants are carefully packaged before shipping.
Live plants naturally vary in appearance depending on season, growth stage, and weather conditions.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
IMPORTANT
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Please check your local growing conditions before purchasing.
No pesticides are used in my backyard growing area.
Thank you for supporting small backyard growers!

Plant arrived looking wilted. It recovered overnight. Almost a foot tall, no doubt it will produce. Well packed with extra trimmings. Good job.
Plant and crown material arrived slightly wilted. Plant recovered by next day. Crown material started growing overnight. I just put it into a pot and growth overnight. Good job.
The plant arrived as expected. It looks to be healthy. I planted it right away in a giant grow bag! I am excited to see what this little cutie does! Thank you seller!
