“It was a little small but for the price it was OK. It was a nice healthy plant and I would buy again.”

Seller's description

Specifications

May include: A cluster of ripe, glossy black blackberries hanging from a green stem with serrated leaves. Several smaller, unripe red berries are visible on the vine, showing a transition in color and development on the plant.

What you'll get:
Two healthy Chester Blackberry starter plants, 4 to 8 inches tall, rooted and ready to plant. Carefully packed and shipped to arrive in excellent condition.

Growing basics:
Sunlight: Full sun is essential for the best fruit production. Chester needs a warm, open, sunny position with at least 6 hours of direct sun a day to produce its best crop of large, sweet berries.
Soil: Moist, well-draining soil enriched with plenty of organic matter. Work in generous amounts of compost before planting to build a fertile, moisture-retentive growing environment. Chester performs best in slightly acidic soil with a pH of around 5.5 to 6.5.
Planting: Space plants 4 to 6 feet apart to allow good airflow and room for the canes to develop fully. Plant at the same depth as the plant was growing in its nursery container.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season, especially during flowering and fruiting when consistent moisture directly affects berry size and sweetness. Deep, infrequent watering is preferable to shallow, frequent watering. Avoid waterlogging.
Mulching: Apply a generous layer of mulch around the base of each plant to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain the slightly acidic soil conditions Chester prefers.
Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring as new growth begins. A second application after fruiting helps the plant recover and build strength for the following season.
Support: Chester produces vigorous, semi-erect canes that benefit from the support of a trellis or wire system. Training the canes onto a support makes harvesting easier and improves airflow through the plant, reducing the risk of disease.
Pruning: Blackberries fruit on second-year canes. After harvest, remove the canes that have fruited down to the ground to make room for the strong new canes that will carry the following year's crop.
Hardiness: Chester is one of the most cold-hardy thornless blackberry varieties available, performing best in USDA zones 5 to 9 and tolerating winter temperatures down to around minus 20°F (minus 29°C) with adequate mulching. It is an outstanding choice for gardeners in cooler northern climates who want a reliable thornless blackberry.

What makes Chester special?
Chester is one of the most widely grown and trusted thornless blackberry varieties among home gardeners and commercial producers alike, and its combination of exceptional cold hardiness, large fruit, and reliable productivity has made it a firm favourite for decades. Developed by the USDA, it was specifically bred to extend reliable thornless blackberry growing into cooler climates where other varieties struggle to survive the winter, and it delivers on that promise consistently year after year.
The berries are large, firm, and sweet with a mild, pleasant flavour that is excellent for fresh eating, baking, jams, and preserves. Chester is a late-season variety, ripening after most other blackberries and extending the fresh berry harvest well into late summer. Thornless canes make picking straightforward and scratch-free, and the plant is vigorous and productive, settling in quickly and rewarding consistent care with generous yields season after season. For gardeners in cooler climates who want a dependable, high-quality thornless blackberry, Chester is simply one of the best choices available.

All plants are grown and packed with care. If your plant arrives damaged, please get in touch and we'll make it right.
