Scale shows how much smaller the model is than the real animal. A 1/9 scale model means it is 9 times smaller than life size, so every 9cm on the real horse becomes 1cm on the model. To work out model size, divide the real animal’s height by the scale number. Example: a 180cm horse in 1/9 scale = 20cm model, 1/12 = 15cm, 1/20 = 9cm, 1/32 = 5.6cm. Common scales are 1/9 (Traditional), 1/12 (Classic), 1/20, and 1/32 (Stablemate). Scale stays correct, but final size varies by breed, so a Shire in 1/9 will still be much larger than a Shetland in 1/9. Simple rule: the bigger the second number, the smaller the model.
