Highlights
DAVIS VEGETABLE PAINKILLER is my very favourite antique "medicine" and I'm always SO excited to find one. This is a lovely scarce aqua blue one, in great condition. There is some internal mineralisation inside. It would date from 1880s to 1910s based on side seam style and top. Such a nice antique display bottle! Embossed 'DAVIS' on the front, and VEGETABLE and PAINKILLER on the two side panels. Note photos are taken in light to accentuate the embossing.
Measuring 15cm x 4.5cm. No chips or cracks!
HISTORY: First distributed in 1839 Perry Davis' "vegetable elixir" was widely regarded as a wonder drug. Perry Davis was a chronic pain victim as a result of a childhood accident. In the front room of his house he mixed the first bottle of his soon-to-be world-famous "medicine". He was quoted “I searched the globe in my mind’s eye for a cure during my illness and selected the choicest gums and healing herbs,” he later told a newspaper. What his mind’s eye found was a mixture of 0pium and 114-proof alcohol. This, along with various other ingredients including myrrh, spruce gum, camphor, and chili peppers left him feeling no pain. Since "Perry Davis Pain Killer" was a registered trade brand name, there was no legal requirement to make its ingredients public on the bottle. It was distributed across the globe to Christian missionaries and during the Civil War was the pain killer of choice for both soldiers AND their horses!!

Also to note: All of my bottles/jars/treasures have been dug up by hand from decades buried in the earth. As they are authentic vintage found excavated pieces, some may have small scratches/chips/marks. I have cleaned all items with a slow soak bath in gentle detergent; however, some may retain slight remnants of dirt or rust, which should be able to be removed with a more rigorous clean. Other various items included in photos are not for purchase/not included in the sale.
