Highlights

This was supposed to be an easy assignment.

Photograph a field of sunflowers at sunset.

Two weeks to get it done.

Plenty of time.

At least, that’s what I thought.

But as the days passed, it became clear this wasn’t as simple as it sounded.

Weather didn’t cooperate. My schedule didn’t line up. But that wasn’t the real problem.

The real problem was the flowers.

I drove from field to field, only to find the same issue. Their alignment didn’t work. The rows ran the wrong direction. The light fell flat. And the younger blooms tracked the sun, turning away from where I needed them to face.

Every location looked promising at first.

And every one of them failed.

With time running out, I was ready to admit it.

I wasn’t going to get the shot.

Then I heard about one more field.

Two days left.

I drove out, not expecting much.

And there it was.

A hillside of mature sunflowers, their faces fixed, all turned in the same direction. Facing east.
That evening, the sun dropped low behind them, exactly where I needed it.
The light lined up. The composition fell into place. The scene finally worked.

I took the shot.

Two weeks of searching.

And it came down to one evening.

Sometimes the most important part of photography isn’t skill.

It’s patience.

And knowing when to let nature decide.
