Somewhere beneath the Kentucky hills, the world keeps going without you knowing about it. The little brown bat consumes up to 1,000 mosquito-sized insects per hour. The Indiana bat, which hibernates in Mammoth Cave's cool, stable depths, is federally endangered — the cave is one of its most critical wintering sites in North America. Above ground, Eastern deciduous forest takes over: oak, maple, hickory, and fern understory threading through the hollows.

The barred owl (Strix varia) is the cave's unofficial sentinel. Its "who cooks for you" call echoes through the Kentucky hills on spring nights. The cave cricket (Hadenoecus subterraneus) forages on the surface at night and carries nutrients back underground, feeding the beetles, the spiders, the entire lightless food web beneath your feet. Without it, the cave starves.
