Seller's description

Specifications

May include: An open cardboard box of vintage art supplies. The box is labeled "Feinste farbige Magnesia-Kreide" and contains several sticks of pastel chalk in various colors, each wrapped in paper. The box is brown with black text.

This set represents a stage in the development of writing instruments in the early 20th century, when simple chalk was only technologically improved to improve the experience. The name “Ulma-Kreide” and the note “mit der schiebbaren Hülle” on the packaging indicate a patented solution — the chalk is placed in a paper holder with a sliding mechanism, which allowed it to be used without direct contact with the hands and reduced the risk of breakage.

The set contains colored pieces of magnesia chalk, which are made of magnesium carbonate, which differs from ordinary school chalk with a finer structure and less dusting. The packaging indicates “Giftfre” and “Sandfrei”, which indicate a higher quality and safer product, as well as an improved production process.

The typography, ornamental frame and use of German allow this item to be dated to around the 1910s–1930s. The set still contains the original cardboard box with 12 units, making it an interesting example of both the history of stationery and industrial design.

The set is almost complete - some of the crayons are broken.
