Egyptian Scarab Beadwoven Pendant Green Elytra Wings Bugs Insect Gold Filled Chain MAGICAL Scarab Necklace Gift for Her by enchantedbeads
Scarabs are MAGICAL, they are a symbol for good luck.
To make this beautiful pendant I used a found Scarab** cabochon and a carnelian glass cabochon (for the little globe the bug is caring). I surrounded the cabochons with size 15 golden and galvanized gold seed beads from Japanese Miyuki. The body of the scarab is dimensional. The back is made using glass cabochons surrounded by dark blue size 15 seed beads. The wings are embroidered around natural bright green color Elytra Beetle wings*, using size 15 seed beads in hues of gold, light green, dark blue, and small genuine carnelian**** beads. On a 28 inch 18K gold filled chain.
Dimension: 3" inch or 80 mm in length.
I made this Scarab for the Etsy Beadweavers Team Challenge: “Mystical, Mythical and Magical Creatures”.
*These are real Elytra Beetle wings that come from Thailand. The insects are farmed in accordance with the regulations of CITES (Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). They live a full life and were not harmed in any way.

I am fascinated by the ancient Egypt and the history of the Scarab. I tried to recreate the colors and forms of the Scarab imagery with large colorful and glittering wings. Scarab is the Egyptian Symbol of eternity teaching us about the elements of creative forces, letting us know that destiny is always at work in our life.
The species of beetle represented in the numerous ancient Egyptian amulets was commonly the large sacred scarab (Scarabaeus sacer). This beetle was famous for his habit of rolling balls of dung along the ground and depositing them in its burrows. It seemed to the ancient Egyptians that the young scarab beetles emerged spontaneously from the burrow were they were born. This creative aspect of the scarab was associated with the creator god. The ray-like antenna on the beetle's head and its practice of dung-rolling caused the beetle to also carry solar symbolism. The scarab-beetle god was believed to push the setting sun along the sky in the same manner as the beetle with his ball of dung'. (from the Internet: Egypt Mithology)
***Scarabs were popular amulets in ancient Egypt. They survive in large numbers and, through their inscriptions and typology, they are an important source of information for archeologists and historians of the Ancient world. They also represent a significant body of ancient art. Scarabs were generally either carved from stone or molded from Egyptian faience. Once carved, they would typically be glazed blue or green and then fired. The most common stone used for scarabs was a form of steatite, a soft stone which becomes hard when fired'. (Wikipedia)
