Highlights
"A. S. Roe (full name Azel Stevens Roe, 1798–1886/1887) was a 19th-century American novelist known for writing wholesome, moralistic fiction aimed at family audiences. No modern hardcover reprints appear to exist based on current searches. Roe’s works have not seen widespread modern reissues (unlike some contemporaries), though print-on-demand reproductions of similar titles (e.g., via Amazon) exist for other books in his catalog.
Resolution; or, The Soul of Power" (full title often given as "Resolution, or, The Soul of Power") is a novel by American author Azel Stevens Roe (A.S. Roe), published in 1871. It belongs to Roe's body of popular 19th-century fiction, which typically features moralistic, sentimental, or inspirational stories exploring themes of personal character, duty, love, and self-improvement. Roe (1798–1880s) wrote several similar novels like James Montjoy; or, I've Been Thinking (1850), To Love and to Be Loved, The Star and the Cloud, and others, often aimed at a general audience with uplifting messages.
Plot and Themes
Specific detailed plot summaries are scarce online due to the book's age and relative obscurity (it's not widely digitized or discussed today). Like many of Roe's works, it likely centers on a protagonist's personal journey toward "resolution"—meaning steadfast determination, moral firmness, or willpower—as the true source ("soul") of inner power and success in life. Expect elements common to the era's fiction.
Character-driven story emphasizing virtues like perseverance, integrity, and faith.
Overcoming personal or social challenges through inner strength rather than external force.
Possible romantic subplot or family drama, with a focus on emotional and ethical growth.
The title plays on "resolution" in two senses: personal resolve (willpower) and perhaps a narrative resolution or decisive turning point. It portrays resolve as the essence of true power, aligning with 19th-century self-help/moral literature.
This is a rare, out-of-print Victorian-era American novel. You might find physical copies in rare book collections, libraries, or secondhand markets (e.g., via AbeBooks or eBay listings for Roe's works). It doesn't appear to have a strong modern following or adaptations, unlike more famous contemporaries.
Born: August 16, 1798, in New York City. Died: January 1, 1886 (or 1887 per some sources), in East Windsor Hill, Connecticut. He initially worked in the wine business but later turned to writing full-time. Roe produced about a dozen popular novels in the 1850s–1870s, often with titles emphasizing self-improvement, perseverance, love, and moral lessons (e.g., I've Been Thinking; or, The Secret of Success, True to the Last, To Love and to Be Loved). His books were commercially successful in their day, praised for their straightforward style, "natural interest," and suitability for young readers and families. They were frequently reprinted in uniform editions (as seen in the photo you shared). Today, they are mostly of interest to collectors of Victorian-era American literature or scholars studying popular 19th-century fiction. Resolution; or, The Soul of Power (1871) was one of his later works, presented as his twelfth novel in that series." Grok AI
We believe this to be a retired library book due to residual paste-on sign-out pocket envelope on inside front cover. Leather boards have paper dust jacket from, "The Adjustable Fits Any Book, Just The Thing for Schools and Libraries. Pat'd May 3.70 and Feb 14.88.". "The Van Everen. Size A". As you can see by the associated photos, binding is cracked, front board has detached, DJ is torn and soiled. Pages 131 - 134 has also detached from the sewn binding. Margins of page's shoe finger smudges. There are occassional light, penciled notes. Paper is fragile. Nothing interferes with this works readability. Most flaws consistent with a book of this age. It is over a century and one half old. Probably could use rebinding. 348 pages. 7 x 5 x 1.5.
We rely heavily on the associated photos for the best description of the condition of this book. Please do not hesitate to seek additional information if needed. Thank you for visiting our shop and we hope you have found just the treasure you have been looking for.
