Highlights

Before a single bomb dropped, the crews of America's WWII bombers gave their aircraft something the Army never issued: a name, a face, and a story painted across the nose. This is that story on a water bottle.

The Lucky 13 design features a grinning cartoon cat riding a bomb — one of the most iconic images of the WWII bomber era. Airmen were deeply superstitious, and "Lucky 13" was their way of taking the worst-case scenario, painting a smiley face on it, and climbing in anyway. Black cats, the number 13, a lit cigar — every bad omen turned upside down into a talisman. That spirit of defiance, humor, and quiet courage is exactly what made nose art the defining folk art of the air war.

The cat-on-bomb motif appeared on B-17s, B-24s, and B-25s across the European and Pacific theaters. It wasn't a guarantee — it was a wish, repainted thousands of times by young men with roughly a 1-in-4 chance of not finishing their tour.

Eighty years later, that image is still everywhere: on shirts, tattoos, museum walls, and now your water bottle.

Response from Ben

Thanks so much, Jennifer! Love hearing that the Lucky 13 bottle is a hit with a tabletop war gamer - that's a perfect home for it. Having your support means the world to a small shop like ours, and dreaming up these designs is the fun part for us. Hope he gets years of use out of it! - Ben & Nicole
