Antique Leather-bound Poetry Book: William Shenstone Poetical Works 1812 London Engravings

A genuine early 19th-century leather-bound volume, Poetical Works of William Shenstone, published in London in 1812. This small-format antique book retains its original leather binding, now heavily worn with significant edge loss and surface deterioration, consistent with over two centuries of age.

A prior owner’s early inscription is present on the front endpaper, and their name on the second page, adding to the sense of provenance and history. Based on the inscription, this book likely originated from County Cork in Ireland. Not a fine collector’s copy, but a compelling and affordable example of early 1800s printing with strong visual character.

The condition is good given its age, with interior remains intact and presents beautifully, with period typography on laid paper and a finely detailed engraved frontispiece alongside an illustrated title page vignette. The text block in this 4.5-inch pocket style book is stable and fully readable with some expected toning and foxing of the pages. The leather cover is loose but mainly intact, with evident degradation to the binding.

This is an authentic Georgian-era book that works exceptionally well as a decorative object—ideal for styling on a shelf, desk, or stacked with other antique volumes to create an “old library” aesthetic.
