Highlights
Known in Old Norse as Nata, nettle was an abundant leafy green heavily utilized across both Norse and Anglo-Saxon cultures. In Norse and Germanic folklore, its fiery sting linked the plant closely to Thor, the god of thunder; tradition held that keeping nettles indoors or tossing them into a hearth fire during a storm would protect a timbered home from lightning strikes. Gathered along rivers, fields, and settlement edges, it held immense value in early botanical and protective lore. The Old English Herbarium described it as a plant that “fights against cold,” while the 10th-century Nine Herbs Charm in the Lacnunga manuscript reveres its historical standing: “Nettle it is called, it attacks against poison, it drives out the hostile one, it casts out poison.” Its use extended well into the late Middle Ages; the Icelandic Lǽknisfrǿði (c. 1475–1500) offers a fascinating glimpse into early dietary routines, instructing the reader to “Take nettle from a clump, salt it very well, and eat it the next day fasting.”
Nettle is famously covered in fine, stinging hairs, requiring the use of thick gloves when handling raw. However, once blanched, boiled, or cooked by heat, the sting is neutralized, transforming the plant into a highly nutritious, edible green. The cooked leaves offer a refreshing, rich, earthy spinach flavor, historically used as a staple for hearty soups and steeped teas. Treated with respect, it remains a robust, historical workhorse for the modern kitchen garden.
Each packet contains approximately 200 open-pollinated, non-GMO seeds.
