What is wood fired pottery?

Wood firing is a traditional technique in which wood is the sole fuel used to heat the kiln. Instead of uniform heat, the process exposes pieces to swirling flames, ash, and embers. This melts onto the clay to create one-of-a-kind, natural glaze effects.

Why is wood fired pottery more expensive than pottery fired in an electric or gas kiln?

Wood-fired pottery is much more expensive to produce, either due to high failure rates or high firing costs to fire with an expert. It is also extremely labor-intensive, with kilns being monitored and fed 24-hours a day for days at a time. Wood-fired pieces are one-of-a-kind and the outcome is unpredictable, which is part of what makes it so fun.
