Seller's description

The first thing you’ll notice about this copper tray is how heavy it is. At two pounds four ounces and nearly fourteen inches in diameter, it’s a sturdy, substantial object.

The rim stands roughly half an inch above the central octagram, resulting in a pleasing dimensionality and interplay of light and shade. A craftsman executed the tray’s profuse decoration with tiny punches and a steady hand. Foliate motifs enliven the entire interior, buds and leaves and tendrils that unfurl in graceful arabesques. A nice detail is the eight-point star in the well of the tray: it’s actually two four-point stars whose arms interlock in an over-and-under pattern. Eight embossed flowers add dimension to the rim of the tray. Likely designed to provide grip to a server carrying a heavy copper tray laden with tea and glasses, the flowers masquerade as decoration.

This beautiful piece likely dates to the early to mid-twentieth century. I’m honored to have it from a private collection. Its penultimate owner received it in Morocco in 1962, a gift from an individual of high social rank.

A gorgeous addition to any interior, perfect for styling a table or sideboard, or to add variation to a gallery wall. It's the perfect gift for that discerning friend who appreciates objects imbued with character and history. It’s simply sublime.

Copper is the traditional gift for the 7th wedding anniversary. Give a gift as extraordinary as they are!

Ships free, fully insured.

Dimensions: diameter 13 ¾ in; depth approximately ½ in.

Condition: excellent vintage condition, commensurate with age and use. Beautiful, warm patina to the copper. A few discrete stains resulting from acidic beverages removing the patina (see photos). A tiny dot of verdigris, 1-2 mm, in the ribbon-like banding near the perimeter of the well. Traces of metal polish to the valleys. Photos are descriptive of the tray’s condition. Please view them carefully.
