Kindly remember - in perfumery, top notes are the notes you smell first and foremost when you initially spray a fragrance, but they are also the fastest to fade away. Your base notes are what remain on the skin the longest and become the true dry down of the perfume over time. This is also why you may sometimes see reviews saying things like “it didn’t last” - in many cases, the person is referring to the TOP notes fading away. Top notes are designed to evaporate the fastest; they physically cannot last for hours because they are made up of smaller, more volatile aroma molecules.

Perfumes develop in three stages:

• Top Notes — the first impression immediately after spraying
• Middle/Heart Notes — the transition phase as the fragrance develops
• Base Notes (Dry Down) — the deepest notes left lingering on the skin for the longest period of time

The dry down is what you are truly “left with” hours later. Woods, musks, amber, sandalwood, vanilla, tonka bean, resins, and skin musks are often part of the base structure because they are naturally heavier and slower to evaporate.

This applies to ALL perfumes and ALL brands — from luxury designer fragrances to niche perfumes to indie creations. A fragrance may open bright, fruity, citrusy, or sweet at first spray, then settle into something warmer, creamier, woodier, muskier, or softer as the perfume evolves on the skin.
