The Story of Frozen Charlotte

Manufactured as early as 1850, these intriguing bisque, china, and porcelain dolls were originally known as Victorian bathing dolls and later became called Frozen Charlotte, inspired by a popular 19th-century moral ballad.

In the tale, young Charlotte sets out on a bitter winter night to attend a ball at a nearby inn. Against her mother’s warning, she refuses to wear a warm wrap so that her finery may be admired along the journey. By the time she arrives, Charlotte has tragically frozen in the sleigh. The story concludes with her devoted beau, Charles, said to have died of a broken heart, the two forever resting together.

Most Frozen Charlotte dolls were produced by numerous factories in Germany between 1850 and the early 1900s, particularly in the Lauscha region. Few were marked, and many imperfect examples were discarded near the factory sites. Over time, some were buried in the surrounding earth and later recovered, contributing to the mystery and romance that surrounds these small Victorian treasures today.
