Remarkable 1950s Vintage Cardinal Mahjong Set w 8 Jokers, 152 Hard Tiles, NMJL ready!

What a beautiful find! 1950s era mahjong by famed maker Cardinal, a classic set, and one of the most popular sets in its day. This beauty has crisp, clear paint on shiny creamy white colored Catalin tiles. (Catalin is a similar plastic to Bakelite.) The tiles are painted in colors of dark green, red, black, and navy. I particularly love the decorative lace-like design of the soap tile on this set. The hand painted tiles are all in excellent condition. There are very rare crazing lines seen on a couple of the tile backs and very mild staining on the edges of 1 tile (picture included). This set has a unique chamfered edge for a more luxurious feel. They also feel weightier in the hand than many of the more modern sets and make a lovely clattering sound. The tiles measure 1 1/4 x 7/8 x 1/2 inches.

This set shows very little color variation across the all original tiles. No chips were seen when I hand cleaned each and every tile. There are 8 flowers, and 8 stickered jokers, making it ready for American style play. Jokers weren't officially added to the league rules yet and so all sets from this era have stickers to connote the jokers. There are also four swirly bakelite racks in a vibrant green, yellow, red and fawn with coordinating thick swirly bakelite stoppers. All of the flippies are in good order and I have added vintage chips to decorate the metal ends. There is a pair of vintage white dice with black pips, and a case key included. I have added a silk purse for all your winning hands with this fabulous set.

The original trumpet style case shows mild wear most noticeably on the back side. A new handle replaces the broken one. The Cardinal logo is still visible on the interior lining. It is otherwise in good working vintage condition. The latches close easily and are ready to keep your tiles protected for a long time to come.

The tiles, racks, and case were cleaned and it is ready to play with when it arrives at your door.
