Highlights

Turn a plain wire crate into a snug little den your dog actually wants to sit in. A beginner-friendly PDF sewing pattern, four sizes, instant download.

NEW: the pattern now includes full instructions for two-door crates, plus an improved size-your-own calculator so you can fit any crate.

Seven panels, a roll-up front flap, two wooden toggles. Simple shapes, but the fit is all in the details, and the details are what I've worked out for you. If you can sew a straight line and follow a clear diagram, you'll end up with something that looks properly made.

A shop-bought crate cover can cost more than the crate itself, and there's no exotic material in them. It's cotton canvas. What you're really paying for is someone working out how it all goes together, and then charging you for the privilege. That's the part I've done for you here. Choose your own fabric, match it to your room, and you get that tailored, made-for-the-space look for a fraction of the price.

I designed this the way I wished patterns were written when I started. No assumed knowledge. No skipped steps. Every stitch is walked through with a clear diagram, so you're never left guessing what "stop on the dot" actually means.

WHAT YOU'RE MAKING

A tailored cover that drops over a standard wire crate like a lid over a box. A solid top, back and sides for a calm, den-like space, and a front flap that rolls up and toggles open when it's time to come out. Crate with a door on the side too? The optional two-door version adds a second roll-up flap there. It softens the look of a crate so it sits in your living room instead of hiding in a corner.

WHAT'S INSIDE THE PDF (17 pages)

Full cut lists for four sizes, S through XL, with seam allowances already included

A clear fabric and tools checklist, with how-much-fabric tables for three bolt widths

Beginner techniques explained properly: an even seam allowance, and the corner-gap trick that gives it a crisp finish

Step-by-step illustrated instructions, every step shown, start to last hem

NEW: optional two-door instructions, a second flap for crates with a side door, with its own measuring worksheet, layout map and notes at every step that differs

NEW: an improved size-your-own calculator, fill-in worksheets that build every panel from your own crate measurements, seam allowances worked out for you

A plain-English glossary, every sewing term decoded

SIZES

S (24"), M (30"), L (36"), XL (42"). Fits the standard wire crate sizes, with a table of typical breeds to help you choose. Between two sizes? Round up. Non-standard crate or a second door? The calculator pages walk you through measuring and sizing it yourself.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

A basic sewing machine and straight stitch. Heavier cotton canvas, duck or ticking (8 to 12 oz). Matching thread, two wooden toggle buttons, a bit of string. Nothing specialist. Heavy fabric is genuinely easier for beginners, it doesn't shift around.

A NOTE ON SKILL LEVEL

This is written for nervous beginners. I mean it. The hardest thing in the whole pattern is sewing in a straight line and remembering to stop 1 cm before the corner. There's a practice tip for that too.

Great guide, really easy to follow! I've never sewn anything and am really happy with how this turned out. I've still got to hem the bottom and one side, but taking a little break as it's taken me longer than expected 🫣 Just a note that the guide assumes the door is in the middle of the crate, whereas the door on my Kong crate is off centre. so I had to measure that side for the flaps and door myself. luckily it was easy to adapt

Seller is super responsive and helpful. I have a crate that I had to custom design the sizing and it ended up being too large. Not to the fault of the product, however the guide wasn’t as helpful as I’d hoped. The project took me around 16 hours over two days. I am a beginner but had the help of an experienced seamstress and it still was a laborious process. Overall I think it’s great for someone with experience and if you have a crate that matches the pattern closely.
