Highlights
Persian antique cobalt blue handblown glass vessel. There is some confusion as to what these types of bottles were used for. Some say they were tear catchers. The story goes that when a sultan went to war the wives were supposed to cry into them so that when the Sultan came back they could measure how much their wives missed them. Others say they were used as a perfume bottle which would sprinkle rose water.
Bottles such as this one have been shown in the Corning Museum of Glass, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum. The consensus is that they were made sometime between the 1600s and 1800s most likely in Persia but possibly in Bohemia as well.
It measures 3.25” in diameter at the bottom and 10” tall. There is a rough pontil on the bottom and a number (EC76.24) hand written in what appears to be paint. It was purchased at the estate of a collector of fine antiques in the Chicago area. This bottle is in excellent antique condition.
