Mackenzie Childs Summer Frock Chowder Bowl Founder's Era 1989

"Whimsical" is pretty much the first word that springs to mind when one thinks of Mackenzie Childs pieces. Because if you are aware of Mackenzie Childs, you know that they were THE design team of choice for creative, eclectic, interesting people in the 1980s, 1990s and into the 21st century. Based in Aurora, New York, Victoria and Richard had a hand-picked team of gifted artisans creating wonderful pieces of usable art. And if you know of Mackenzie Childs, you know that their name is a guarantee of quality. Because of all these things, we are seeing a resurgence of its popularity as a collectible.

In the lovely Summer Frock pattern, with its pink and green checkerboard exterior and its sprig-filled lattice work on the inside, this is a 7" by 5" piece of sheer charm masquerading as a chowder bowl.

In nearly perfect condition, with no cracks, chips, or nicks. The terra cotta base has some wear commensurate with age. The stamp is clear and readable, with the "Victoria and Richard / Mackenzie Childs" oval backstamp, the 1989 production date, the 1983 MC founding date, and the Summer Frock pattern ink-stamped on the terra cotta.

From the Mackenzie-Childs Website:
Each piece is hand-painted and no two are exactly alike. Our pottery decorators mix their own colors, resulting in slight variations. Brush strokes also vary, so you will see the artisan’s “hand” in the work. The signature red clay that we use in all of our Aurora studio pottery has its own delightful identity. In the finished piece, you may notice tiny pinholes or white spots which are characteristic of majolica pottery. These form when organic materials within the clay explode through the glazed surface during firing, or implode pulling the color inward. We like to think that these dimples and freckles add to the personality of each piece.
